Do You Want the “Greater Things”?

Do you want to know more about what Jesus describes as the “Greater Things?” Love your enemy! The Bible declares everyone has received ALL the promises of God through Jesus Christ, and as such, we should be expecting “Greater Things.” But there’s only one small catch. You gotta love people, including your enemies. So if your enemies are thirsty, give them the BEST WATER EVER!

John 1:50 - "Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

I think we all want “Greater Things.” Regardless of our definition of “greater things,” deep down inside, I believe we all want to see greater things. For me, greater things are His greater love.

John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”

There’s nothing’s wrong with us wanting “greater things” per se… but if we are honest with ourselves, we’d admit that our entire life has been about getting, earning, or manufacturing “greater things” on our own. We want, what we want, when we want it, and we expect it. For most, humility is not natural.

Romans 10:3 - "For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God."

For example, I struggle with humility. I struggle with being humble. Thoughts in my head cry out, "no one is looking out for me, so take care of your own." I struggle to accept that grace is enough. I feel as though I must earn the greater things.

Ephesians 2:8 - "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;"

I struggle with the thought, "surely I must behave 'right' before I can expect to see greater things." Did you know that "grace" is the unmerited and undeserved favor of God? That’s big.

Romans 15:29 - "I know that when I come to you, I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ."

At times I struggle with believing His grace is enough. I want to help, I want to oversee, and I want to manage everything, including my own salvation. But, salvation is the only thing that matters, and it is THE FREE GIFT! Grace, we can't earn it, and we don't deserve it.

John 5:20 - "For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these so that you will marvel."

Unfortunately, all too often, our greater things are based on “self-love,” which, by the way, is not a good thing. Meaning, we want grace, but we don’t "receive it" because we don’t feel like we "deserve it." My aim here is to lay a foundation for change.

Hebrews 9:11 - "But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation;."

Self-love deprives us of the Greater Things of God. Self-love is any form of self-centeredness, which includes all selfish thoughts and actions generated apart from God or in the absence of God. Greater things cannot exist alongside self-love.

1 John 1:9 - "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Let’s see if we can eliminate “self” from “love” and come to believe we’ll see the greater things of God, and we can start by loving our enemies. Become rivers of living waters to those who hate you, and I guarantee you’ll see the greater things!

John 14:12 - "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father."

Greater things are simply His “Greater Love” in the form of greater works, produced and provided by God for our good and His glory.
